The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association starts the 2020 competitive golf season with its most prestigious event, the New Mexico-West Texas Amateur Championship.
The 44th annual event will be held June 12-14 at Horizon Golf Club in Horizon City, Texas, just outside of El Paso.
The event has players traveling in from around the region as they try to scratch their competitive itch while many state and regional golf associations are yet to hold any championships.
Many of the best players from New Mexico and West Texas will be battling to identify the top amateur player in the Sun Country. The New Mexico-West Texas Amateur represents the epitome of amateur golf in New Mexico and West Texas.
Past PGA Tour Winners
Past winners such as Tommy Armour III, Bart Bryant, Rich Beem, D.J. Brigman and others who have since won more than $30 million on professional tours.
Holding the event in the El Paso Metro area means there will be more Southern New Mexico entrants who typically do not travel up to the northern part of the region.
Tee times start at 8 a.m. each day of the Championship with the leaders going out in the final groups on Saturday and Sunday.
2019 New Mexico – West Texas Amateur Greg Condon
Fifty-seven-year-old Greg Condon of Monte Vista, Col., won the 2019 New Mexico- West Texas Amateur Sunday at Paako Ridge Golf Club. It was his third title.

Condon won in 2017 at PaaKo Ridge. He also is a perennial contender in USGA qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur and Senior Amateur.
By virtue of his New Mexico-West Texas Amateur win, Condon also earned an automatic selection to represent the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association in the 2019 Pacific Coast Amateur which will be hosted at the UNM Championship Golf Course later in the year.
